In the world of addiction, most of the attention is usually spent focused on substance abuse, and rightly so. Addiction is classified as a compulsive behavior that reaches far behind the consumption substances. For instance, binge-eating disorder is a fairly prevalent eating disorder that affects many, but is regularly under diagnosed due to the lack of awareness in the medical community. Recent estimates show that 1.6% of females and 0.8% of males have suffered with a binge eating disorder over the past year. Even more recently a screener has been developed to help identify those that might be suffering, called the Binge Eating Disorder Screener-7 (BEDS-7). The screener was developed by and team led by Barry K. Herman, MD, of Shire Development.
