"In the United States, up to 24 million people suffer from some kind of eating disorder. Eating disorders are characterized by an unhealthy, often life threatening relationship with food. While many associate eating disorders with restricting your food intake, a binge eating disorder is characterized by over eating for emotional or other psychological issues. “Emotional eating,” means that those who feel stress, anxiety, depression or other negative emotions might use food to subdue or alleviate those feelings. People who suffer from this disorder might feel like food is their only “friend.” There are also several social stigmas to binge eating disorders. The pressure these days to be thin, and the shame one feels for being overweight can contribute to the emotional distress that causes a binge eating disorder.
