From an addiction recovery perspective, “enabling” is the act of supporting or facilitating an addict’s behavior in a way that allows it to continue. While what you are doing may feel kind and helpful, it is actually harmful to the addict and those around them. As we tell people at our Sacramento rehab center, enabling prevents the person with an addiction from fully experiencing the consequences of their actions and thereby lessens their motivation for seeking help, thus prolonging their addiction.
