While anyone can become addicted to drugs or alcohol, there are groups of people for whom addiction is more likely. Whether there is a genetic component or if their susceptibility is more based on social and environmental factors is unclear. What is clear from our work with people at our Sacramento rehab center is that knowing that someone close to you may be at a higher risk of drug or alcohol addiction allows you pay closer attention to changes in behavior that may indicate an addiction is forming.
When looking at the statistics, the following groups of people are known to have a higher risk of drug or alcohol dependency:
Young people
People aged 18-24 are more likely to abuse drugs or alcohol than people in other ranges. In particular, young men show a higher likelihood.
